Of all the types of prayer, which is the most powerful one to religious and spiritual people?

Intercession (Romans 8: 26-27)

The most powerful form of prayer, both personally and corporately is intercession. Intercession is when you pray on someone else’s behalf or when the Holy Spirit prays on your behalf through the gifts of speaking in tongues which is considered the language of Angels.

When this occurs the Holy Spirit Himself prays for you or He will pray for that which He is asked to pray for specifically. It is the perfect prayer to God, because the Holy Spirit Himself is speaking to God directly on your behalf.

The word intercession in the Greek is Huperentugchano/ hoop-er-en-toong-khan-o, meaning to make intercession for as in Jesus makes intercession for us in Heaven (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25).

There is a gift of the Spirit that typically follows intercession. It is the gift of discerning of Spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10). The reason is so during an encounter where intercession is at hand, the person with the gift of discernment is prompted by the Holy Spirit as to what influence may be at hand by a particular Spirit if any. That way if the need arises during intercession to cast out a demon, the knowledge of what is going on is there, this makes for a more effectual intercession.

When praying on someone’s behalf, direct your prayer from the outset by the subject at hand specifically.

It is important to note, that many instances of intercession, when it is not by the Holy Spirit or praying in tongues is to intercede on someone’s behalf, it is to put yourself in front of the bullet. To intercede is to ask the Lord to allow you to stand in for the person you are praying for. It is to say, I will take their place.

This aspect of intercession is what makes it the most dangerous of prayers, above and beyond everything else.

Before interceding on anyone’s behalf, you should be certain that you have heard from the Lord that you should actually intercede on the person’s behalf so that spiritually, you are not on your own.

To intercede without being led by the Spirit to do so is to invite spiritual attacks on yourself that manifest in trouble with your finances, health, relationships and your life in general. Intercession is not to be taken lightly.

The aspect of praying in the Spirit, or praying in tongues, is at the center of dispute with many Bible teachers today.

Many subscribe to the notion, that praying in the Spirit was a gift of the Spirit for the early church alone and is not something Christians today can do, or that the Holy Spirit is not in the business of giving this gift anymore.

There are many problems with this assertion. The most significant of which, is the scripture does not say the gift of speaking in tongues was relegated to a specific people, during a specific time, for a specific purpose.

To believe that the gift of speaking in tongues is not a gift of the Spirit today, is to read something into the scriptures that is plainly not there. You would also have to reason, with your own interpretation, why other gifts of the Spirit work, and this particular one does not.

The gifts of the Spirit are the “word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, the working of miracles, prophesy, discerning of Spirits, diverse kinds of tongues, and interpretation of tongues”.

(1 Corinthians 12:4-11)

So for anyone to say that speaking in tongues does not apply today, they can easily pick from the other gifts of the Spirit and say they don’t work either for some dubious reason as well. But no person in their right mind would attempt to dispute the gifts of prophesy, or healing, or the word of knowledge, because these gifts are more active in the minds of modern thinking, pastors, teachers and others.

The reality is, the gift of speaking in tongues is as alive today as any of the gifts of the Spirit.

It is probably more accurate to say that those who dispute the use of speaking in tongues as a gift of the Spirit today either don’t understand the gifts, don’t understand scripture, are religious in their thinking about scripture and the Holy Spirit, and most certainly believe in Santa Claus.

Ok, maybe they don’t believe in Santa Claus, but they pretend to be Santa Claus on occasion.

The most effective way to determine the truth about the matter, is to simply ask someone teaching, this doctrine if speaking in tongues is not a gift of the Spirit today and to show you where that is in the Bible. That should settle the matter quickly. It will also reveal something else about them to you, and that is that they rationalize the scriptures.

When you encounter this thinking, you must be careful that you’re not in the middle of some religious influence. Besides all that, millions of people all over the world pray in the Spirit daily. If this gift is not for us today, how does one explain the manifestation of the gift in such great numbers? Beyond the act of people praying in the Spirit, how do we dispute the results people get from doing it? Prayer lives are more powerful, people hear from the Holy Spirit more intently and physical health is better as a result of the Spirit’s intercession. People are comforted and given peace while praying in the Spirit. There are many experiences that would have to be explained in order to say the gift of speaking in tongues is no longer in play.

Praying in the Spirit has a number of aspects to it that are all initiated by you. One is allowing the Spirit to pray through you for others, another is asking the Spirit to pray for you and your specific needs. The final aspect, is praying in the Spirit for corporate edification.

When you pray as the Spirit wills, you are just praying in the Spirit with no particular direction, you’re just being a vessel. This places your prayers in agreement with others who are submitted to the Holy Spirit in the same way. This type of intercession helps people around the world, praying for God’s will in the Earth and a host of other things the Holy Spirit has need of.

The reason this is important to do, is that the world is under the influence of Satan. The world was delivered to Satan because of Adam’s sin. The condition of the World today is because it is under Satan’s control.

“All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them, for that is delivered unto me, and whomsoever I will, I give it” (Luke 4:5-6)

This is part of the exchange Satan had with Jesus during the 40 day temptation in the wilderness. Satan said that the world was his, and that it was delivered to him, that he could give it to whomever he wanted. Jesus never disputed this point with Satan. In another account Jesus makes the statement during an instruction to the Disciples, when asked how to pray.

“Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven” (Matthew 6:10)

This means that God’s will is not being done on earth, in the way His will is being done in Heaven. The reason is because the Earth is in the hands of him it was delivered to, Satan.

There is no scripture that introduces a different covenant that sets speaking in tongues aside. There is no biblical support to the notion that speaking in tongues is not for us today. Millions of people all around the world pray in the Spirit with results.
